How to rename an asset (Page, Folder, File etc.) in Cascade

Summary

This article explains how to rename an asset in Cascade CMS, including pages, files, images, and folders. It also provides naming conventions to follow and shows how renaming an asset affects its system name, website URL, and location in the Cascade asset tree.

Body

Summary

In Cascade CMS, an asset is simply an item you work with on the website. An asset can be a page, file, image, folder, or other piece of website content.

Renaming an asset changes its system name. The system name is the name you see in the asset tree on the left side of Cascade and, for pages and files, is also used as part of the website URL.

When naming assets, system names should:

  • Be all lowercase.
  • Use dashes (-) instead of spaces.
  • Avoid punctuation and special characters.
  • Avoid dates whenever possible.
  • Be descriptive and concise.

For example, instead of New Student Resources 2026, use new-student-resources.

Important: Check for Links Before Renaming, Moving, or Deleting a Page

Renaming, moving, or deleting a page can potentially break links that point to that page. Before making one of these changes, it is important to check the page’s relationships so you understand what other pages or content may be linking to it.

You can learn more about checking page relationships in the related knowledge base article. You can also contact Web Services to request an inlink report, which can help identify links that may need to be updated as part of the change.
