How to Report a Phishing or Junk Email

Summary

This guide shows you how to report a suspicious or spam email in Outlook and what steps to take if you're unsure about the message. It also provides support options for recovering legitimate messages flagged by mistake.

Reporting a Phishing or Junk Email

1. While in Outlook, left-click to highlight the suspicious or junk email.

2. Look for the shield icon on your toolbar.

3. Click the drop-down arrow on the Report button to see two options:

  • Report Phishing: sends the email to CWU's Security Team for review and deletes it from your inbox.
  • Report Junk: sends the email to your 'junk email' folder.

Stay Safe and Alert

Remember: CWU will never ask for personal info in a BCC message or send links to off-campus sites like Google Docs. No legitimate organization will ever ask for your password.

Phishing emails create urgency to trick you into acting quickly. Slow down, read carefully, and when in doubt, contact the CWU Service Desk at 509-963-2001. We’re happy to help you determine if a message is legitimate.

Thanks for helping keep our CWU community safe.

Submit a Service Request

If you’re missing an email and it’s not in your Junk folder, it may have been quarantined. This can happen if the sender doesn’t meet CWU’s security requirements. Use the link below to submit a service request with as much detail as possible (sender, subject, etc.).
