Passkey Setup - Students

Summary

This article gives a basic explanation of synced passkeys and walks through setting one up.

Introduction to Passkey

Passkeys are the modern replacement for Passwords and traditional 2-factor authentication.  At CWU, we allow the student population to register "synced" passkeys, which can be stored in the compatible password manager of your choice.  This can include the Apple/Google/Microsoft password manager built into your OS/browser, as well as traditional password managers such as Bitwarden or 1Password.  Since these can be synced across devices, they are available on any device your password manager is on, making scenarios like new phone/computer much easier.

While any compatible password manager will work, this article will cover Google Password Manager, which is built into the Chrome browser and Android OS.  The process is essentially the same for other password managers, but we cannot hope to cover instructions for all possible password managers here.  If you have issues on Step 6, ensure your browser and password manager are capable of storing Passkeys (FIDO2).
