How to Report a Suspicious or Phishing Email

Summary

This guide shows you how to report a suspicious email in Outlook and what steps to take if you're unsure about the message. It also provides support options for recovering legitimate messages flagged by mistake.

Reporting a Suspicious Email

  1. Open the suspicious email in Outlook and make sure you're on the Message tab.

Locate the shield icon.

  1. Click the Report button to see two options:

    • Report Phishing: sends the email to CWU's Security Team and deletes it from your inbox.

    • Not Junk: moves a safe email out of your Junk folder.

Not sure if the email is safe? Forward it to CWU.ServiceDesk@cwu.edu. Don’t click links or reply until we confirm it’s safe.

Stay Safe and Alert

Remember: CWU will never ask for personal info in a BCC message or send links to off-campus sites like Google Docs. No legitimate organization will ever ask for your password.

Phishing emails create urgency to trick you into acting quickly. Slow down, read carefully, and when in doubt, contact the CWU Service Desk at 509-963-2001. We’re happy to help you determine if a message is legitimate.

Thanks for helping keep our CWU community safe.

Submit a Service Request

If you’re missing an email and it’s not in your Junk folder, it may have been quarantined. This can happen if the sender doesn’t meet CWU’s security requirements. Use the link below to submit a service request with as much detail as possible (sender, subject, etc.).
