How to Download Alternative Formats of Documents in Canvas

Central Washington University is committed to universal access of all digital documents in Canvas. Ally is a tool which integrates with Canvas and provides students with alternative formats of uploaded course documents.

The alternative formats provided by Ally are not a replacement for formal accommodation requests. Ensure you are registered with CWU Disability Services if you do need an accommodation. The alternative formats provided are available to everyone in the course.

What if the alternative format is low-quality?  A low-quality file alternative format file is derived from a low-quality source file.

  • Faculty - please contact Multimodal Learning to get help improving the quality of your source file
  • Students - contact your instructor to receive help getting a higher quality source file

The alternative formats available are:

  • Tagged PDF: Structured PDF for improved use with assistive technology
  • HTML: For viewing in the browser and on mobile devices
  • ePub: For reading as an e-book on an iPad or other e-book reader
  • Electronic Braille: BRF version for consumption on electronic braille displays
  • Audio: MP3 version for listening
