Backing Up Bookmarks on Browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge)

Backing up bookmarks is a great way to make sure that your favorite sites are easily accessible across your favorite web browsers. Most web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox will automatically sync your bookmarks across devices but if you want a greater sense of security you can back them up yourself. The steps for each browser are the same across both Windows and Mac OS. Except for Safari which is only on Mac OS. 

Google Chrome

Step One: Open your Google Chrome browser and one the top right of the window click on the 3 vertical dots, opening a drop-down menu. Hover over "bookmarks" which will open another drop-down menu. Then click on "bookmark manager "opening a new window taking you to the bookmark manager page. Alternatively you can use the shortcut ctrl+shift+O.

Step Two: Now that you have made it to the bookmark manager. On the top right of the page click on the three vertical dots they will be highlighted by the blue page banner. In the drop-down menu click on "export bookmarks". This will create an HTML file that you can save on your computer's file manager. 

Step Three: Now that an HTML file has been created choose a location to save the file.

Firefox

Step One: Open Firefox towards the top right of the window click on three horizontal lines this will open a drop-down menu. Find and click on "Bookmarks", this opens the Bookmark menu. At the bottom of the Bookmarks menu click on "Manage Bookmarks" or use the shortcut ctrl+shift+O.

Step Two: This will open a new window in the mid-top of the window click on "Import and Backup". This will open a drop-down menu click on "export Bookmarks to HTML...". This will create an HTML file that you can save on your computer's file manager. 

Step Three: Now that an HTML file has been created choose a location to save the file.

Microsoft Edge

Step One: Microsoft Edge browser is designed a little differently from Google Chrome or Firefox the bookmark bar or favorites bar as Microsoft refers to it is actually not visible by default. The steps on how to make the favorite bar visible (bookmark bar) and how to add bookmarks are outlined in this article. 

Step Two: In Microsoft Edge open the favorites drop-down menu by clicking on the favorites icon it should be located towards the top right of the Microsoft Edge window or using the shortcut ctrl+shift+O.In the favorites menu click on the three horizontal dots on the top right of the menu. This will open another drop-down menu. In the menu click on "export favorites". This will create an HTML file that you can save on your computer's file manager.

Step Three: Now that an HTML file has been created choose a location to save the file.
